Who We Are
St. Luke's of the Mountains is a Biblically-orthodox Anglican parish belonging to the Diocese of Luweero in the Province of Uganda. We affirm Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and acknowledge the Bible as the authoritative Word of God.
We combine the tradition and teachings of the worldwide Anglican Communion with a Spirit-led evangelism evident in our worship as well as many local and international outreach activities.
Our Beliefs
We teach that God. . .- Has created and is sustaining all that exists and whose truth is revealed to us in the Holy Bible.
- Has entered human history in the crucified and risen Savior, Jesus of Nazareth.
- Works through the church for the redemption of creation by the power of the Holy Spirit.
- Changes lives through the Gospel of Christ, calling Christians to lives of: – continuing renewal – discovery of new ways to communicate and live out the gospel of Jesus Christ in the world. – welcoming and witness to all no matter where they are on life's journey of faith. – practicing compassion and justice as signs of Christ's presence in the world.
- Has provided a foundation for life and ministry in the Holy Scriptures and the historical witness of the Christian church – especially in the ecumenical Creeds.
Mission Statement
St. Luke's of the
Mountains exists to make disciples who can make disciples
who know Christ and can make Him known.
Discipleship is an
intentional journey in grace. The goal is to grow "into
the measure of the full stature of Christ" (Eph.4:13).
Discipleship enables us to put faith at the center of all
we do so that we can live lives of joy, satisfaction, and
purpose.
These marks of discipleship – Pray, Worship, Read the
Bible, Serve, Develop Spiritual Friendships, and Give –
are components of the spiritual journey which we at St.
Luke's lift up. These marks reveal the joy as well as the
responsibilities of Christian life. They move us from
personal growth to concern for others. They are anchors
that keep us spiritually focused as we go through life so
we can receive Christ's blessings and be a blessing to
others. We invite you to grow with us by learning
to...
- PRAY daily
- WORSHIP weekly
- READ the Bible
- SERVE at St. Luke's and beyond
- Develop SPIRITUAL FRIENDSHIPS for growth and encouragement
- GIVE of time talents and resources.
Our History
In the early 1920's there were few homes, one school, and one church in the whole Crescenta Valley. Among the early residents of the valley was an artist, S. Seymour Thomas. Born in Texas, but trained in Europe, he established an international reputation. Calling a group of people together, Mr. Thomas shared his vision of establishing an Episcopal church that would be part of the Anglican Communion in the valley. A magazine article from that period reported what he did:The cornerstone was laid on Easter Sunday, 1924 and the first services were held at St. Luke's on Christmas of that same year. Over the years, St. Luke's of the Mountains has had seven pastors, planted two churches, done mission outreach in twenty counties and is known for its ministry locally, nationally and internationally. St. Luke's is a dynamic and loving congregation – a local church with a world vision – that is built on the ministry of its people. On the morning of the meeting at the house, Mr. Thomas took his paint box and went to the lot and sat down and painted a picture of the dream-church, just what he thought would look well and appropriate to the mountains and nearby structures. It was of stone walls with a red tile roof. It was wet and he brought it in and set it on a chair and all were enthusiastic over it.
